Description:

Provide engineering support to Space Communication System design and development for the NASA, GRC, Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) as a component of the NASA Gateway. The PPE is planned as a supporting component of Gateway, which is an upcoming NASA Program to provide a continued presence in lunar orbit to facilitate both human and robotic missions in cislunar space. Individuals will work with VPL and NASA counterparts to provide insight to the vendor communications system design and development effort, provide engineering assistance to assess the vendor application of new technology radios for PPE to identify risk mitigation, and may participate in work related to communications system integration to Gateway. All of these roles would involve evaluations and analysis to provide independent verification and validation of the vendor systems.  

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with NASA Space Communications Systems (SN/NEN/DSN) used for Space Missions support.
  • Experience/background with communication system / communication component level design/development, and verification and validation techniques.
  • Experience in assessing technical performance implications of system design approaches.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Team oriented - excellent interpersonal skills.
  • U.S. citizenship

 

Other Desired Skills:

  • Related to Space Vehicle communications:  Commanding and telemetry, Antenna Coverage, Radiometric Tracking, RF Communications (S/X/Ka-band), Link margin analysis, High data rate telemetry, TDRS familiarity, SDR/reconfigurable radios technology experience, familiarity with NASA Space communications vehicle/mission platform configurations and NASA Space Communications reference interoperability standards.

 

Education/Experience:

  • BS Electrical Engineering (or other core Engineering)
  • 5 to 10 years related experience
