Gridded Ion Thruster Engineer

Description

Vantage Partners, LLC is a multi-disciplinary engineering services company providing progressive solutions to projects within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the NASA prime contractor community.

The selected engineer will be responsible for the following:

  • Support gridded ion thruster technology engineering development projects in collaboration with NASA engineering and project management team personnel and US industry partners working under contract with NASA.
  • Perform engineering design, analysis, experimental testing, and data reduction in support of the gridded ion thruster system development projects and similar electric propulsion systems.
  • Review technical documents associated with the development of gridded ion thruster system hardware delivered under contract to NASA including drawings, test plans and procedures, data and other related material.
  • Support the evaluation and/or implementation of gridded ion thruster propulsion systems for flight missions by performing analysis, assessments and testing for specific applications.

Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge pertaining to the design, principles of operation and application of gridded ion thruster technology. Knowledge and understanding of the technology at the system level and the component interfaces.
  • Knowledge associated with the design of gridded ion thruster components (magnetics, optics, hollow cathodes), material selection, key design considerations, etc.
  • A thorough understanding of the plasma physics associated with gridded ion thruster operation.
  • Experience with experimental testing of EP devices.  Knowledge associated with experimental test techniques, facilities, apparatus and equipment utilized to conduct this work.
  • An understanding of electrostatic probes and their use in the interrogation of the plasma produced by these devices.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated through authorship and presentation of technical material on the subject of electric propulsion.

Other Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with the full range of electric propulsion technologies and the principles of operation of these devices.
  • Prior experience with performing analytical and computation modeling of electric propulsion plasmas.
  • Proficiency in the use of Labview for instrument control and data acquisition.
  • Knowledge and/or direct experience associated with the integration of propulsion subsystems on spacecraft.
Education

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electric Propulsion, In-Space Propulsion, Aerospace/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering

Experience

  • 3+ years of experience
